Semen has been imported from Iceland into the United States since 1998. We have been adding sheep to our flock from AI genetics for several years now and the Iceland rams represented in our ewes and rams include the following: Abel, Bambi, Blaevar, Dropi, Flotti, Haengur, Heli, Hunn, Kani, Kunningi, Laekur, Lodi, Mjaldur, Moli, Molur, Morro, Noi, Peli, Rektor, Sedill, Sponn, Tuli,Visir, Tyr and the leaderrams Ari, Biskup, Prestur and Skumur. Our 2005 lamb crop was our first "home grown" AI lambs after having artificially inseminated 17 of our best ewes (we ended up with a 65% take rate).

This page has descriptions of some of the AI herd sires with offspring (ewes) in our flock. To view our ewe flock click here.
Moli #93986 born 1993
- One of our personal favorites

Points: 8.5-8-9-9.5-8.5-17.5-8-8.5-8=8.5
Moli is white horned, with vigorous head, very muscular shoulders and especially wide chest. The back is very strong, loins muscular and the leg muscle is deep and thick. Feet are strong and well placed. Moli is finely built with thick fleece. Moli is said to be one of the single most influential rams in Iceland. According to Southram, Moli is the most used sire in Iceland ever. His progenies were "superb in every respect." Our ewe "Serena" is an AI daughter of Moli, and several of our other sheep have Moli in their pedigree.

Abel # 00-890- homozygous white ram with good strong horns - scored 8.5 for wool, 9.5 for back muscling and 9.0 for chest. Overall score was 87.
Eldar #01-922 - a homozygous white ram with an overall score of 84.5 His leg scores is 18.0 and rump a 9.0. His daughters are good milkers (103 milk index). He is said to have broad and very muscular shoulders and exceptionally broad chest. Most notably he is unrelated to all of the rams at Southram so is a good outcross. His progencies are said to be vigorous, long bodied with good conformation and leg muscling.
Kani #98-864 - moorit mouflon horned ram - son of Molur. Described as having good conformation, a wide chest, broad back, strong and muscular with good loin muscling.
Kari #03-908 - Kari is THE fleece ram - a whopping 9.5 for fleece. Overall he's average in conformation, scoring 8s and 8.5s but for the fleece...!!
Lodi #00-871. Homozygous white, horned ram. Long bodied ram. Superb conformation and overall score of 85 out of 100. Excellent back score of 9.5 with excellent leg muscling.
Molur #95-812. Horned white ram that carries solid and moorit. 82.5 overall points. Fine horns, vigorous head, muscular shoulders and good conformation. Good quantity of wool.
Noi #94-995. Considered "the fleece ram" of Iceland. Noi consistently passes on his superior silky, fine fleeces to his offspring. His overall score was 8.5 and his lambs are large, long bodied and the ewes are especially milky. "
Peli #94-810. Horned white ram - a grandson of Thettir, another Iceland favorite. Overall score was 84.5. Wool described as "pure white, immensely soft and beautiful with quantity above average, thick thel and especially fine tog."
Sjodur # 97-846. White horned ram. Exceptionally long bodied and vigorous. Neck is broad, chest wide and back very strong and well muscled. A triplet out of Krona who has had 4 sets of triplets and three sets of twins, very milky ewe
Sedill #01-902 is a son of Sponn and grandson of Garpur. He scored an overall 84.5. We have a very nice Sedillson in the flock and look forward to seeing the lambs he will produce for us. His fleece has been very dense, long with a nice even balance of tog/thel, and cottony soft. Sedill's dam was a prolific milker scoring 4.9 for milking abilities.
Skumur Black and white spotted leaderram. He carries moorit.
Tuli #98-858 A Garpur son, Tuli had a magnificently wide hornset. His overall score was 82.5 as a lamb. Our AI son of Tuli is probably better than his sire. Our friend and fellow shepherd, Gary Holcombe, measured the Tulison at 5 months of age and declared him "excellent" - which is high praise indeed from a shepherd who has set very high standards and raised the bar for our American produced herd sires. Upon skirting the fleece, it was long, well balanced between thel and tog, with a very dense and cottony soft thel.
Vinur #99-867 - WOW Garpur AND Mjaldur in his pedigree, this ram is long bodied and sired the really excellent Iceland ram Kunningi! So even though Vinur's overall score of 83.0 isn't as good as some rams he is a good sire. He is said to have a good quantity of wool with good ratio of thel/tog. His milk index is above average at 103.
Visir #01-892 Homozygous white horned ram with overall score of 85.5. Extraordinary back muscling and superb loins, broad and muscled but not long. In 2003 his progeny came out better in lamb evaluations than any other AI sire's progenies have done before showing superb conformation.

Beloved sons and grandsons - Southram continues to bring in rams to the station each season who often represent the same lines over and over. Two of the favorites are Garpur and his son Laekur, who are heavily represented in some of the more recent importations. Even though it might look like there are "new rams" offered through AI genetics, it's important to look at each ram's pedigree closely. I've put together a list of the most recent AI sires offered and you will see how closely they go back to Garpur and Laekur:
